What is motion design?

Motion design is graphic design that moves: type, logos, interfaces, data and 3D animated to tell a story or sell an idea. Also called motion graphics, it sits between graphic design, animation and film. I’m Irfan Yousuf, a motion designer in Boston, and I use it to make people stop scrolling.

What does a motion designer do?

A motion designer plans, designs and animates moving graphics for brands, apps and social media. Day to day that means storyboards, style frames, animating type and logos, interface micro-interactions, 3D scenes and short-form edits. My own work spans app interfaces, 3D, kinetic type, data visualization and logo animation.

Is motion design being replaced by AI?

No. AI is changing how motion design gets made, not replacing the people who make it. AI tools now speed up concepts, product imagery and video assets, and I use them every week at adMerge Studios and Ajinomoto Cambrooke. Taste, timing and storytelling still come from the designer.
