Okay so on October 5, 2026, the New York City Council held a hearing on AI safety, and OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta answered questions under oath. SpaceXAI, the company behind Grok, didn't show up.
Who skipped the NYC AI safety hearing?
SpaceXAI, the Elon Musk company that makes Grok and was formerly called xAI, skipped the New York City Council's AI safety hearing. The other four big AI companies sent people. SpaceXAI left an empty chair.
Did SpaceXAI get a subpoena?
Yes. SpaceXAI didn't respond to the Council's invitation in mid-September, so the Council issued a subpoena on September 28. SpaceXAI skipped the hearing anyway. Council Speaker Julie Menin said the Council is "pursuing that subpoena in court."
What did the AI companies say at the hearing?
The AI companies at the hearing would not guarantee their AI is safe. Asked about the odds of something catastrophic, OpenAI's Morgan Dwyer said "I don't know," adding that 1%, 10% or 20% would all be unacceptable. Anthropic, Google and Meta also stopped short of guarantees.
Bro. If I skipped a subpoena, my mom would know before the judge.
Why does the NYC AI hearing matter?
The NYC AI hearing matters because a city made AI companies answer safety questions in public, under oath. That's new. And it shows who's willing to sit in the chair, and who isn't.
Real talk: these companies are building tools millions of us use every day.
So don't tune it out. Just watch who shows up. Like, now.
